9/1/22 Big Creek Lake
51 this morning feels good! We've got all day with nowhere to go!
Big breakfast of sausage and eggs and oranges., then we take care of heating water for bathing, hair washing, etc. (The only facilities here are well kept pit toilets and potable water). Ready to meet the day!
We move to site #20 which is up the mountain a bit and has a nice view of the lake through the still green trees! A little shade too, which is nice.
We hike a bit down to an interesting-looking lily-pad-covered pond near the lake. Only a few blooms. A few ducks paddle by and one or two rocks catch our eye.
The lake is very clear and cold with a pebbly/sandy shore.
We wander around the campground a bit - a few more sites are reserved for the upcoming long Labor Day weekend, but things are very quiet. There is another lake nearby (Upper and Lower - we're at the lower) but we aren't sure how far. We begin on the trail, but it is pretty bleak through burned-out forest with no shade, and it is getting hot in the sun so we abort. Interesting how a tree here and there has managed to survive the fire.
I tell Greg that if those blue berries were edible, we'd have enough for a pie! A few thistles have managed to gain purchase too.
Total R&R, though Greg does collect and split some firewood for later. We sit outside and read and Beth begins writing some of the trip blog.
Spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, followed by a beautiful, mellow sunset. Actually the sun is setting somewhere we can't see, but these clouds catch the colors as dusk falls.
The ripples from a single small boat catch and reflect the colorful clouds as the fishermen head to shore.
