Oct 24, PA Amish to Pretzels

October 24, Tuesday

65 degrees at 10AM this morning as we bid good-bye to Mom Johnson and wind our way through the countryside.  Buggies are common on the roadways and horses are working in the fields.   We decide to take a circuitous route over to my sister Anita's house rather than the faster, busier, more commercial Rte 30.

Beautiful farmland, horse farms and countryside.  We head south parallel to the Susquehanna River and cross it near Holtwood Dam, where we stop and walk a trail along the river.

.

 Some Fall color remains.

The GPS takes us the fastest route to Anita's, which goes through many small towns like Brogue and Felton.  The roads are winding and narrow and we even cross a few narrow, one-lane bridges.  We pass many apple orchards but we are a few weeks past harvest - the big apple festival was 2 weeks ago.

We stop for lunch at Claire's, a small restaurant near Anita and Kevin's house, and then go another mile or so to visit the Snyder's Pretzel Outlet.  Lots of treats in this area with emphasis on all kinds of pretzels and potato chips.

We park at Anita's and let ourselves in and clean out the Trek. Their house has corn fields on 2 sides, which haven't been harvested yet.
They arrive home from work, along with their dog Cody, a sweet huskie/australian shepherd mix who thinks he's a lap dog!

Vanessa, our niece,  arrives to join us making and enjoying a delicious salmon dinner. We catch up while watching a bit of the Astro's game (muted).  Vanessa looks great and it sounds like she and her fiancĂ© Kevin are doing well - we will look forward to coming back next September for their wedding!

The boys head to bed and Anita and I stay up to chat.
