Monday, September 16

Leaving Colton State Park, we stopped to have breakfast at the overlook.  As the sun rose, the fog and clouds rose from the gorge also, creating some interesting views!

On way to the East Rim

A few trees are beginning their turn towards Fall color and the morning air was crisp, suggesting what is to come.

From Colton we headed north to New York State.  We had been to the Corning Glass Factory a long time ago and decided to stop at the "new and improved" Corning Museum of Glass.  All new buildings and great galleries, history, demonstrations (and requisite gift shop).

Who knew glass was around back in ancient Greece and Egypt?  In the 15th century they were still eating food with fingers, so the communal goblets had knobs and protrusions to keep greasy fingers from dropping them.  More recently a candlelit chandelier from Prince Albert's time and a gorgeous cut glass punch bowl from the Eiffel Tower Exposition were breathtaking.  Of course Tiffany was represented too, with magnificent panels.  We took several hours and could have spent more time if we had read everything and seen all the demonstrations!

After leaving Corning we made sandwiches in the Trek and headed for Watkins Glen.  Besides being famous for auto racing, it is home to a 1 1/2 mile hike through an amazing canyon/gorge carved by the Glen River.  It was a little drippy, but we thoroughly enjoyed the walk, stairs and all.

Headed east and ended up spending the night at a Lowe's in Vesta, near Binghamton.  Good wi-fi and a good night's sleep!
