We decide to leave early this morning in the hopes of seeing some wildlife. The only thing we see, however, is roadkill. Skunk and porcupine, and later a deer. We parallel the Little White River for about an hour as we head back to the main road.
Breakfast is cereal with bananas and blueberries at a nice rest stop. And then we make our way to Sault Ste. Marie where we will cross back into the US, into Michigan. The city straddles the border so that there is Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The lochs that connect the Great Lakes are visible as we wait to clear customs, but since we spent a good bit of time here about two years ago, we opt not to stop this time.
We stop at a visitor's center just over the border and pick up a Michigan map and some info. We did quite a bit of planning for the trip up until Quebec, but now are kind of making it up as we go. We opt to go west, along the north shore of Lake Michigan because we haven't gone that way before. Signs indicate that it is part of the Lake Michigan Circle tour. (We did the Lake Superior Circle tour and part of Lake Michigan once before.)
We are in the UP (upper peninsula) and folks that live here are called Yoopers. Folks that live in southern Michigan - "below the bridge" (Mackinaw) are called trolls :) We see many signs that advocate "no mining in eastern UP". We have seen quite a few signs of mining through Canada, and know there is a lot in western UP. Still see many trains and trucks carrying logs.
We stop at an overlook and then head to the Hiawatha National Forest to camp. There we gather fallen wood for a fire and Greg splits it. It is a warm day and he goes and jumps in the lake to cool off - they have a small sandy beach area.
This park is quite large and busy but we only see one other non-Michigan vehicle. Lots of water craft. We enjoy chatting with neighbors who have three kids and a dog, bikes, etc. and are from the Detroit area.
Burgers on the grill hit the spot. Nice fire and good night's sleep.
