We walked the trail a bit this morning. Lots of birdsong. Pesky insects but not mosquitos. The ranger told us yesterday that deer flies
have been bad but are dwindling. They
are about half the size of horse flies which we see a few of as well – they can
really bite!
We decide to take 87N to 15 into Canada because maps show an
information area and we could use some Canada maps/information. We cross at the Saint Bernard de Lacolle
Checkpoint. After about a 20 minute wait,
we breeze through, although the officer seems a bit skeptical that we don’t
have weapons aboard since we ARE from Texas. Nice scenery, small towns. Everything is in French.
The information center is empty and closed. We take 610 to 112E and stop at a Subway
for lunch. Does not agree with Beth at all. We find another small info center but no
maps. There are many information
stations indicated by “?” signs, but many are unmanned and just feature signs
(in French). We finally find one that
will sell us a map of Quebec (in French), and they do have a few brochures. They are located at a ferry which goes to Fort
on an island, but with the rain and all, we pass.
Very heavy rain, so
much that we pull over to wait it out.
About 3:15 we come across an obscure birding area and decide to stop
there for the night. Beth rests a while
with stomach ache. Greg makes himself a
sandwich and we walk around a bit. A
lady named Genevieve comes by and Greg
asks if it is ok if we park here overnight.
She says ok, just no fires or anything…. Glad she spoke English!
Quiet evening. More
rain. Amazing clouds at sunset.
