July 10 Seneca Falls, Montezuma, NY

Sunday, July 10

We wake to heavy rain and 58 degrees this morning!  But the rain soon dwindles and we head west, then north to take a look at Seneca Lake.

There are many wineries along the lake!

We stop at Caywood Point and hike down to the lake, which is rough this morning.

We take a side road and pass several cyclists participating in a race/ride.

We stop at a group of wineries which include 3 Brothers, Stony Lonesome and Bare Dare, as well as the "soon to be legendary" War Horse Brewery.

There are already some limousines and party buses arriving, as this is part of the Finger Lakes Wine Trail. A bit early for us...

Next stop is Waterloo, where we look for my Mom's grave.  Find the church, but not the cemetery
and there is no one around at the church, so...  On to Seneca Falls, the birthplace of women's rights.
We visit the Women's Rights National Historic Park where in 1848 5 women organized the first Women's Rights Convention, which drew about 300 men and women.  I was surprised that these early organizers - Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Martha Wright, Mary Ann McClintock and Jane Hunt were mostly Quakers.

Down the street we visited the National Women's Hall of Fame.  Here, there were pictures and write-ups about the contributions of women in the US.  Begun in 1969, they are moving to a larger location next year and will include more memorabilia and displays.

As it is, it is quite austere.

Selected women must show a contribution to society with global impact, open doors for other women, and overcome obstacles.  Many names were familiar, and included physicians, scientists, writers, dancers and more.  There are forms available for nominating people.

From here we went to a Buffalo Wild Wings near Auburn to watch the final match of the European Cup.  Portugal (even without injured Ronaldo) managed to eke out a win over host France in overtime!

We went back to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge where we had stopped earlier and were told that we could spend the night.  We drove the 3 mile loop through the refuge and then enjoyed a quiet, comfortable night.  Amazingly, very few insects!

Great blue heron

Swallows

Gulls
