Rained most of the night, warm and muggy. 65 degrees at 8:00. We plan the day, then head to the Glacial
Potholes here in the park.
"bottomless pit" |
The potholes are carved into basalt which was a result of
lava flows in the area. When the
glaciers melted they released lots of water which carried gravel, sand etc. and
carved these potholes where there was particularly intense water flow or softer
material, or both.
Back to campsite for another shower and breakfast before we
hit the road., heading west. The rain
comes again. Temperatures drop then
drift back to 65. This area is gentle
rolling hills, smaller farms and more woods. There is water standing in some of
the unplanted fields – enough to attract ducks.
As we approach St. Cloud, irrigation canons appear again and farms are
larger.
In St. Cloud, the rain has stopped and we head for Munsinger
& Clemens gardens, along the river.
There is a beautiful cast iron and bronze Renaissance Fountain with
cranes , cherubs, and at the top – Hebe, cup-bearer to the Gods. Many gorgeous flowers, complete with
sparkling rain drops.
There is also a lower level garden with many trees along the river. Very nice. We leave here about 3 PM and drive to Alexandria. Stop early for a little extra downtime. Anita called. We talked with Matt
.
I LOVE the flower pictures, but you got a little too close to the bottomless pit for my comfort level! Thanks so much for keeping up with the blog and pictures...I love checking in every few days. Kathy (& Garth)
