June 13, 2014 To Sault St Marie

Friday, June 13, 2014

It is a chilly 41 degrees this morning and quite a bit of fog on the water.  Had a light rain last night, but no flying visitors and we had a good night.  The ravens are raucous this morning.

We climb out the rough road again, into Wawa and stop at a Tim Horton's for coffee and breakfast.  These were popular throughout Canada on our Alaska trip and are about as frequent here as McDonalds is in the US. Mostly breakfast, with some lunch items.

From here is about a 3 hour drive to Sault St Marie, known here as "Soo".  Nothing significant along the highway.  Lots of heavy fog, light drizzle.  The lakes soon become visible only as a larger white area amongst the fog shrouded trees. Forget looking for moose, as Greg is busy looking for the road!

Soon we wind back close to Lake Superior and we stop briefly at Old Woman Bay and Katherine Cove for a break.  It is 37 degrees now and there are some significant waves on the lake.

We arrive at Sault Ste. Marie and head for the Bushplane Museum.
There is a nice display about Roberta Bondar, Canada's first astronaut, who flew on the 1992 Discovery Mission.  Then into a huge hangar, where there are many bush planes on display.  Here is Beth coming out of the "Norseman".

In a simulator we watch films which take you flying over the area and then over a forest fire.  Neat way to see it!

We watch a film called "Wings over the North" which is well done also.  They are proud of the Beaver plane which is ranked as one of Canada's 10 most important engineering achievements.

In one corner of the hangar they are preparing tables for a wedding party later!

At 2:45 we are in line to re-enter the US.  This is the only entry point in about 1000 kilometers, so is pretty busy.  Still, we move quickly and are soon in Michigan.  We find a welcome center, exchange money and get some good info.  Then we find a Walmart,  send a few emails and call Mom.  Early stop cause Beth is tired and achy.  Still in the high 30's and misty.  Warm bed feels good!
