June 2, 2013 Banff, Johnston Canyon, Roadtrek Group

June 2, 2013  Sunday

Rose early and had some oatmeal before heading out to explore Johnston Canyon, several miles outside of town.     Saw several elk and deer along the way, then did the 3 mile hike up the Canyon to a lower Falls and an Upper Falls.  Glad we started early, for we saw only 3 people on our way up, but tour buses and many travelers on our way back down. It was in high 30's when we started so we had heavy jackets, hiking boots and I had ear muffs.  We passed a young lady coming down from the hike wearing sweats and flip-flops!!  Local.   Lovely walk with catwalks and bridges.

Returning to Banff saw several Elk including this big bull….

Parked downtown Banff and walked to the Visitor’s Center and several shops.  Lots of shops and restaurants.  It was rainy and cold.  Had lunch in the Trek then went to the local library to use their Wi-Fi for a while.    Drove out of town to Cave and Basin National Historic Site which includes a cave and several pools from hot springs which have a long and colorful history. This is the original cave where the springs were discovered.

Back to the campsite where we all got together for a  “hamburger fry”.  Ann Delfin shopped and many people contributed to a nice dinner with burgers, beans, salads, and cookies.  Temps were in the low 40’s, but we had a wood stove in the shelter, plus two propane fire rings.  Here are a few of the women of the group.  A good time was had by all!
