Oct 28 The Long Road
West
We left home this morning at
7:30AM, with a quick stop at Donald’s Donuts for a croissant
sandwich. Lots of traffic but we
took the new 99 (Grand Parkway) over to I10 west, avoiding much of Houston. There was a good bit of fog as we passed a lot of pastureland and fields. It won't be long till all this land is developed, now that highway 99 is complete.
About 100 miles out 10, we hit a tire remnant from a tanker
truck up ahead. No serious damage, but
it did damage the driver’s side fiberglass – a chunk gone and
several scrapes and dings. Thankfully
the doors to the storage compartments still work. The tanker had 18 wheels, so
one apparently didn’t affect it too much, though it was pulled over.
Just before San Antonio we cross Woman Hollering Creek,
which begs the questions What woman? Why was she hollering? And WHAT was she hollering? I wonder if
anyone knows….
We contine on 10, into arid, rocky scrubland. The grasses are mostly all golden in the sun, and the fog is burned off. Mesquite and other brush abound.
Some cattle in this area, but mostly goats and wide open
spaces with occasional small rocky hills and mesas.
We reach our destination for today – Fort Stockton - about 4:30PM, where we
are greated by Paisano Pete, the 14’ road runner.
At the gas station I ask a local lady for a
dinner recommendation and she suggests Mi Casita.
Nice little place
and the Mexican food was tasty. One wall had signs good for a smile.
Then we joined about 10 other rv’ers at the local Walmart. Temps are good with a nice breeze, and it is relatively quiet.
