We decide to have a nice breakfast this morning, since we'll be traveling. Beth wants to try waffles, so we find them at Soulatso on the square, with great fruit and fresh squeezed oj. Greg has a big, thin omelet. Tasty!
Nicos is prompt in taking us to the airport, which takes all of 10 minutes. The airport is basically one building with just a few workers. It has been a while since we've been on a plane with propellers!
40 passengers and a 45 minute flight on Olympic Air.
We phone the airbnb when we've retrieved our luggage in Athens and a driver (with a red hat) meets us 5 minutes later at exit 5. A pleasant guy, he talks about traffic, driving, Greece's government (he's not a fan), and asks us about Trump (to which we reply that we aren't fans). He seems to think that Trump won because he is very rich. Ten minutes later, he also checks us in, collects payment, and shows us to our room. We joke that he needs more hats!
The airbnb is called Tina's Apartments and is in a residential area. They have built a building with 4 basic apartments behind their home and created a nice little garden area too, which they are obviously still working on.
It has lemon trees, olive trees, a fig tree, pear tree, pomegranate tree and a walnut tree, grapes and just about one or more of most every flower we have seen on this trip!
Pomegranate Tree
The room is fine, good shower, ac. Here, as in several places we've stayed, there is no top sheet, just a nice comforter. We arrive around 2:00 and have all day to chill, blog, watch some tv, nap, read and go for a walk. No restaurants nearby, but they offer (for a price) to make a dinner of Greek salad and a pasta dish. We sit outside near a water feature and enjoy dinner with a glass of wine.
We have an early flight tomorrow, but not to worry. The shuttle drivers start their day at 3 AM and we don't need to leave till 4:00.
Friday, May 11
We wake early and are ready to go at 4:00. The driver, different from yesterday, shows up promptly but we wait a few minutes for a some other people here who also have early flights. We arrive and things go smoothly so that we are at our gate by 4:45 for our flight to Frankfurt. Some people are still trying to get some sleep.
We are served breakfast and find Lufthansa quite pleasant....more legroom, decent food and friendly service. We actually get a gate in Frankfurt (as opposed to parking and taking a bus) and our connection gate is just a 15 minute walk. We breeze through passport control and security. Compared to when we arrived from Houston three weeks ago, this is a piece of cake!
The 10 1/2 hour ride to Houston is uneventful and we eat, drink and catch up on some more movies. We are on the Airbus again and there are few empty seats. Beth watches 12 Years a Slave, Hours and Ferdinand the Bull. Greg catches Fifa Gold Soccer and some Blue Planet episodes as well as Ferdinand. And before you know it (ha ha) we are in Houston. Our friend Jim meets us and ....
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME!
