Huntsville Folk Festival

Huntsville Folk Festival was held in a picturesque park off 19th street in Huntsville.  It featured demonstrations, music, food, crafts and displays from the early years of Texas settlement.

  There were quite a few in costume, some were members of re-enactors groups.  All were friendly and willing to chat, whether it was about weapons, hides, coloring yarn with natural dyes, etc.

The canon was fired every hour. The man preparing it is the education director for a small museum which is located in the park and dedicated mostly to Sam Houston, who was homesteader, general, governor, and Senator.  

Lots of fiddling and other music, including some celtic gospel music, a kazoo player, various singers, a cowboy poet and more.The man on the left in the above picture was playing the spoons.

Some Flora and Fauna along the way...  dewberries, wildflowers, cactus and chickens.

DragonBoat Races, Buffalo Bayou Houston

Dragon Boat races on a beautiful Spring day.  Downtown along Buffalo Bayou, with the University of Houston Downtown in background.

This was a team who were all blind except the drummer and steerer.  They managed quite well.

Each team had a drummer who set the pace.

 There were also martial arts displays, cooking, a magician and other entertainment, as well as food and drink.

Each boat also had a person who steered.

 

You could don a "sumo" wrestler suit and "wrestle".  Funny to watch.






There were some traditional (vietnamese) dances also, like the dragon dance below.  All in all a fun and entertaining day!

40th Annual Celtic Festival in Houston - our first.  Fun day with food, dance, music, sheepherding demo and athletic events.  Here's a whiff...

April Weekend

Two events this weekend.  First, Sam Houston Race Track.

And then a car show in Tomball. From new Lamborghini to 1913 roadsters, with lots in between!

Japanese Festival, Houston Apr 2013

Today was a beautiful day for the Japanese Festival in Herman Park, Houston.

 





 

  The area includes the permanent Japanese Gardens, and the festival featured dance, music, crafts, food and demonstrations.  It also included an exhibit of Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangment.
